According to a provisional rule on the management and supervision of occupational health in workplaces enacted on September 1, 2009, companies that conceal the occupational hazards to workers are subject to punishment.

The rule, which is said to be applicable to all mining trade companies other than coal mine enterprises, states that companies must reinforce their efforts in preventing occupational hazards and provide a work environment and conditions conforming to the relevant national and industry standards as well as taking effective measures to protect the health of workers.

The rule says that companies that cover up occupational hazards will be required to correct the problem within a given deadline and fined between CNY50,000 and CNY300,000. Serious violators will be ordered to cease operation or even be shut down completely.
